We are fulltime RVers and had a Rand McNally GPS for RVs. Within a year, it started acting really weird and not holding a charge, by part way into our second year, we couldn’t keep it working unless we wrapped the charger cord around the unit and taped it. If we hit a bump or moved it, then we were sunk. Another issue was that it was freezing all the time and it seemed to happen at the worse possible moments – in cities or right when we needed to make a maneuver. Since we barely missed our warranty date, there was nothing Rand McNally could do. We hemmed and hawed for several months in regards of what GPS to get – did we get another Rand McNally and hope for the best, try another RV GPS, or just get a car GPS? Well, we really wanted to stick with an RV one since we didn’t want to deal with being taken into city centers or under low bridges etc. Next, I started reading up on the other brands out there…what a headache! Every GPS had good and bad reviews. When I saw one reviewer mention the problems they were having with the newer version of the Rand McNally GPS (the exact same problems we had with the previous version) I knew we weren’t going to go that route again! After much time pouring over reviews, I finally told my husband that I thought we should go with the Garmin RV 769LMT. It was a bit nerve-racking since there were a couple reviews that had legit complaints about misdirections. But when it came to the lesser of evils, Garmin seemed to be the way to go.We haven’t used it on any long trips yet, only short trips around our local area. We leave on a 2300 mile trip in a week or so. Having said that, the unit has already exceeded our expectations in that it is so much more user friendly then the Rand McNally! The touch screen is much easier to navigate, the option to look up street addresses is so much easier, and I love that it tells you what lane to get in for turns and exits. It’s way easier to put on it’s base and remove it as well. I find it much slimmer and lighter then the Rand McNally – I don’t mind sticking it in my purse when not in use.I’m actually excited to get on the road and really try it out!I think we made the right decision! If we run into any problems, we’ll be sure to update. But so far, I’d definitely recommend this one over Rand McNally. It’s worth the extra $$.
